Eating half of one whole avocado a day for a month can lead to weight loss and lower cholesterol levels, according to Australian horticulturist Jodie Campbell.

There is misconception that avocados are unhealthy, but it is proven worldwide that avocados are one of the healthiest fruits to consume as it is low in sugar and is salt-free.

There were two different kinds of avocado, hass and shepard. Avocados are one of the most nutrient-rich and energy-dense fruits available in the market. Avocados are rich in potassium, which is beneficial in the treatment of arthritis and hemorrhoid, and it is also good for the heart as it is a rich source of folic, which has been shown to reduce heart disease and in some cancer cases.

Avocados are cholesterol free and contain sterols that reduce the absorption of cholesterol in the gut. It also contains the highest source of lutein that helps protect against cataracts and macular degeneration, the leading causes of blindness in the elderly.

Avocados are high in vitamin E, which is known to help slow the ageing process. It is beneficial to expectant mothers and can also be served as baby’s first food. Folate-laden avocados can contain up to 80 micrograms or 20% of the recommended daily intake of folate necessary for pregnant women. Increasing the intake of folate before conception and during the first three months of pregnancy, the rick of abnormalities such as spina bifida is greatly reduced.

As a ripened avocado is very creamy and smooth in texture, mothers can feed mashed avocados to their babies, instead of the usual baby food. The mono-saturated fats in avocadoes are essential for babies’ development.

Avocado is a versatile fruit in term of cooking as it can be served as part of an appetizer, and included in even main courses and desserts.
